Men Produce Impressive Comeback In Thrilling Draw

Buckingham Mens’ team made the short trip to local rivals Milton Keynes 3rd XI to face the team sitting at the top of the league.

A slow start, as well as clinical finishing from the home side, cost Buckingham dearly as they went 2-0 down within a matter of minutes. As Buckingham began to settle they came back into the game and enjoyed plenty of possession in the attacking third. Chris Linton made an early impression from the bench and looked dangerous throughout, eventually scoring Buckingham’s first goal to make it 2-1, firing a rebound past the goalkeeper into the far corner.

Buckingham continued to increase the pressure and had several chances as the half wore on, before Milton Keynes broke and finished off a slick counter-attacking move to make it 3-1. The away team’s heads did not drop, however, and shortly before half time Jack Foreman blasted a shot past the home ‘keeper to make it 3-2 at the break.

The second half was hard fought, with both teams having spells of intense attack and defence. Milton Keynes were the first to make a breakthrough, this time scoring from a well-rehearsed penalty corner routine to increase their lead to 4-2. Again, Buckingham’s impressive character showed and they found a way back into the game, Joe Jorritsma converting at the back post after a dangerous run from Chris Linton.

With only a few minutes left on the clock, Buckingham pressed hard for an equaliser as Milton Keynes tried to see the game out. More resolute defending kept out a threatening home attack and then allowed Jack Foreman to break away down the left. His powerful shot found its way through the goalkeeper and evaded several home defenders as it bounced over the line to level the match.

Both teams had chances to win the match in what was a frantic last 60 seconds, but as the final whistle blew the points were shared. Buckingham had picked up their first point away from home, coming from behind to draw 4-4.

Their next match is at home against Aylesbury on Saturday.
