Buckingham Mens’ XI fell just short in their latest away trip, losing a closely fought contest 3-2 against Newbury and Thatcham.
Buckingham started strongly and created early chances on goal following their early pressure but were unable to break through. Newbury and Thatcham grew into the game throughout the half and eventually scored two nearly identical goals – breaking through a Buckingham tackle to square the ball for an easy finish past the impressive Alex Goodhart in goal.
The torrential rain began to ease up as the second half began and Buckingham restarted strongly, as has been the case in each of their games this season. An accurate through-ball from Sam Riley found George Wood, who span neatly inside the area and fired passed the goalkeeper to score his first goal of the season. Buckingham then drew level around five minutes later as James Trumper converted at the back post. By this point, Buckingham were well on top in terms of possession and territory and pushed hard for a third goal. However, as legs grew tired it allowed Newbury and Thatcham back into the game, scoring a breakaway goal with minutes to go.
Buckingham threw players forwards and had several chances to equalise, but Newbury and Thatcham held strong to see out the victory. Buckingham’s next matches come in the form of a home ‘double-header’ at Stowe this weekend against Sonning on Saturday and then Oxford University on Sunday, where Buckingham will be hoping to maintain their 100% home record.
