On Sunday Buckingham traveled to East Conference side Chelmsford for their latest cup match. Without GB players Zoe Shipperley and Morag Mclellan, coach Jones opted to take a youthful side that included three U18 players.
Buckingham started brightly and on a heavy pitch dominated the opening half. However, despite creating a number of good opportunities and earning five penalty corners, they could not find a way through Chelmsford’s organised defence and the sides went into the break level at 0-0.
The second half began in much the same manner as the first, as Buckingham's defensive intensity forced their hosts onto the back foot. Yet, it was not until the sixteenth minute that a rare goal for left back Aly Billington gave Buckingham the lead. The following ten minutes were a disjointed and scrappy affair as both sides were temporarily reduced to ten players at various times, for various offences. However, with nine minutes to go Amie Hone tipped the ball home from a penalty corner to all but secure the win.
Buckingham continued to press for a third and got their reward when they were awarded a penalty stroke with just two minutes remaining. Player of the match Jess Bloom stepped up and calmly dispatched her flick to make the final score 3-0.
This result sees Buckingham safely into the quarter finals in February, when they will travel to Loughborough.
