After the disappointment of a draw in their first league match away at Swansea last week, and buoyed by the return from Welsh International duty of Phoebe Richards and new goal keeper signing Ella Jackson, the squad were determined to get their league campaign properly up and running with a good first home performance.
The game started at a fast pace with both sides intent on attacking. Alex Naughalty was denied by the visiting goal keeper from point blank range, as early as the first minute and when Katrina Nicholson was unable to convert from close range not long afterwards, the side could have been forgiven for thinking it was going to be another frustrating day. However, Nicholson was not to be denied for long, as just two minutes later she opened the scoring. Firing home after rounding the goal keeper, following a speedy counter attack. It was not long before the home side doubled their lead. Abbie Brant producing some fantastic individual 3D skill, before smashing the ball home with an upright, reverse shot. Buckingham continued to have the better of the play but could not add to the score whilst the visitors continued to play good passing hockey and remained a threat. With ten minutes remaining in the half, a period of sustained pressure led to Alex Naughalty making it 3-0. She finished high into the roof of the net, following up on the rebound after Brant’s initial shot. Although satisfied with their first half showing, the side still felt there was more to come.
The hosts started the second half brightly, with captain Zoe Shipperley smashing the ball home from Buckingham’s first penalty corner as early as the third minute. Just a few minutes later in was 5-0. Nicholson claiming her second, when she followed up after a well rehearsed, free hit routine. Despite creating a number of other opportunities, it was not until the visitors were temporarily reduced to ten players that Buckingham added to the score. The home side finally broke the visitors resistance when a fine passing move allowed Brant to tap home on the far post, with eleven minutes remaining. She capped off a player of the match performance, when she duly completed her hat-trick two minutes minutes later, following another fine passing move. Despite creating a number of other good opportunities in the remaining minutes, Buckingham could not add to the score and the game finished 7-0.
