With Hockey being one of the few sports not fully affected by COVID-19, Buckingham travelled to the University of Birmingham knowing that a draw or victory would guarantee them fourth spot and a semi-final place in the Top 4 playoffs. Whilst for the home side only victory would move them out of the relegation playoff slot.
With injures and the fatigue of a long season beginning to take their toll, Buckingham started slowly against an athletic and enthusiastic home side. Buckingham gradually played their way into a game that was a fast flowing, entertaining end to end encounter, which was impressive given what was at stake for both sides. On thirteen minutes it was the visitors who opened the scoring when a fine passing move resulted in Lottie Porter slotting home to give Buckingham a 1-0 lead.
The second quarter was another even affair with both sides creating openings but neither being able to capitalise as both goalkeepers performed well.
In the third quarter with the home side pushing forward for the equaliser, Buckingham created a number of good openings but could not find the final pass. Both sides had opportunities from penalty corners but once again both defences stood firm.
The final quarter was an messy affair as the home side threw everything at the visitors but with Captain and Player of The Match Zoe Shipperley to the fore, Buckingham defended well and despite some late pressure held on to for a very hard fought win.
"Saturday was a really tough day at the office. As expected Birmingham fought for every ball and although we looked pretty fatigued in the week, once again the side showed immense spirit, character and resilience to come though another tough encounter to secure a top for finish for the third year in a row. It wasn't the prettiest of performances but given our list of injuries and the volume of hockey over the past few months, I was very proud of the girls and their performance."
