Pirates Produce Some Fantastic Displays To Qualify For Regional Round
Having had a really positive season in league hockey, the Pirates went into the tournament confident but also fully aware that there would be some very tough and competitive matches.
Their first match was against an Amersham and Chalfont side who had got the better of them in their two league fixtures and when the Pirates found themselves a goal down early on, it looked like a third defeat was on the cards. However, the boys responded superbly and a fantastic backhand strike from Trystan Jones shortly afterwards seemed to spark the boys into life. And a few minutes later Quinn Graham was first to pounce on a penalty corner rebound and seal a memorable and important 2-1 win.
Having got off to the perfect start, Buckingham next took on Wycombe B. A slick team passing move that saw Trystan Jones tap home from close range gave the Pirates and early lead but despite dominating the rest of the match, they were unable to add to the scoreline.
In their final pool match, the boys played Marlow B. Once again, a superb passing move that was well finished by George Emerson gave Buckingham an early lead but Marlow battled back and scored late on to draw 1-1. A result that still meant that Buckingham topped the group.
Up against a very strong Wycombe A side in the semi-final, Buckingham went 1-0 down early on. However, once again, the boys showed tremendous character to fight back with Zeb Hodgson bringing the scores level from close range just before half time. Mid way through the second half a slick penalty corner routine saw Rufus Barnes smash the ball home to give Buckingham a 2-1 lead. It was a lead they held until the last couple of minutes when Wycombe drew level with a spectacular volley finish. Yet again Buckingham responded brilliantly. George Emerson finishing off another fine passing move with very little time remaining to give Buckingham an impressive 3-2 win.
With a top two finish and place in the regional round secured, Buckingham took on a quality Marlow side in the final. Buckingham began really well, creating a number of clear chance but they were unable to convert and towards the end of the half were thankful to Layth Elmrabti in goal for some quality saves to keep the scores level. Unfortunately, Buckingham started second half slowly and a defensive lapse resulted in Marlow opening the scoring in the first minute. The Pirates fought back and created a couple of openings but they could not convert Marlow scored again late on to seal victory. However, the final loss could not detract from what had been a historic day for the club as the Pirates became the fist ever Buckingham boys side to qualify for the regional rounds.
