Buckingham Mens’ 1st XI saw their final fixture before the Christmas break take them to Wokingham to face South Berkshire.
Buckingham made a fast start, as has been the case in the majority of their games so far in their first season, but were unfortunate not to convert any of the early chances.
South Berkshire made the breakthrough on 25 minutes as two players escaped their defenders and linked up to fire into the bottom corner and take a 1-0 lead against the run of play. The rest of the half was played out in Buckingham possession but no goals came.
After a quick half time refocus, Buckingham continued where they left off and more chances went by - the South Berkshire goalkeeper had an outstanding game and for long period looked as if he simply could not be beaten.
At around 55 minutes, however, Lorne Robb took control of the ball on the left touchline, broke through a couple of tackles into the D and his bouncing shot evaded everyone to find the bottom corner and equalise. Buckingham were hungry for what would be their first away win since the team’s formation and continued to push forwards. With 5 minutes to play, a short corner routine went narrowly wide and it seemed like it was simply not their day. But then with 90 seconds left to play, Charlie Maclure topped off his impressive performance by winning another short corner. This time, man of the match Mark Meeks was on hand to smash home the winning goal on the rebound to give the side a well-earned, but hard fought, win and great confidence heading into the Christmas break.
