Buckingham Men's 1st XI took the field for their first ever league match on Saturday against Banbury HC.
Buckingham started the match well enjoying possession in the Banbury 25 with James Trumper and Phil Arnold creating some early opportunities. Banbury came back into the game but good defending by Mo Jones and Josh McCallum kept them at bay until Buckingham broke the deadlock after 20 minutes. Harry Gaunt scored Buckingham's first ever league with a well executed strike from a penalty corner.
Banbury piled on the pressure for the remainder of the half and despite winning two penalty corners of their own, it was Buckingham that went into half time in the lead.
The second half was similar to the first - a fast start from Buckingham before Banbury enjoyed plenty of possession and territory. 15 year old Alex Goodhart was excellent in goal and the Buckingham defence kept Banbury at bay. The match remained on a knife edge until Buckingham struck again with one minute remaining - Keegan Gregory pouncing on a rebound before calmly slotted past the goalkeeper to cement a 2-0 win. A memorable first win for the newly formed men's side.
