Buckingham U14 Boys Into Last 16!!

On Sunday Buckingham travelled to Reading for the latest round of the National Championships. The game proved to be a tight, tense and hotly contested affair. Buckingham began slowly and it was the the home side who had slightly the better of the opening exchanges although the defence of Jessie McCallum, Freddie Sullivan, Zeb Hodgson and Thomas Emerson were well marshalled by Layth Elmrabti in goal and allowed their hosts nothing in the way of opportunities. The remainder of the half was an even affair with plenty of industrious, high quality work in midfield from the likes of Frank Bursell, Quin Graham, Harrison Cairns and George Emerson. Although there were few real chances at either end in the first half, it was Buckingham who created the clearer openings but were unable to capitalise.
Buckingham began the second half with renewed energy. With forwards Sam Foreman and Callum Mcintosh creating openings, they were rewarded with a dream start when Trystan Jones was first to pounce on a bobbling ball in the D, guiding the ball past the home keeper for a 1-0 lead inside two minutes. Buckingham continued to have the better of the play and chances but didn't extend their lead until the 55th minute when Josh Hinde-Smith fired home from a well worked penalty corner move to double Buckingham's advantage. However, the home side refused to be beaten. They fought back and made the score 2-1 with a well taken goal of their own with seven minutes remaining. With the game in the balance, a nervy few minutes followed but the defence led by captain Freddie Walker again stood firm and when Jones smashed home a fierce back hand, following a fine passing passing move, to make the score 3-1 with under three minutes remaining, the visiting supporters relaxed and were able to enjoy the closing minutes. It was another fantastic performance from the entire squad. The boys workrate on defence was outstanding and their superb team spirit combined with some fine attacking hockey saw them through to the last 16 of the competition.
